My first thoughts are in agreement with the possibility of a strong let down
but my personal experience is that infants can arch for a variety of causes.
I would certainly look at positioning, flexing the infant, possible birth
injury etc. However having nursed an infant who arched for none of the
above reasons I would agree that it is wise to look at some not so obvious
causes. In my second son's case he would arch if anything touched his head
or feet irregardless of how softly. So he would arch if he was wearing a
sleeper or booties for example, or a blanket touched his feet or head, or if
he kicked a table cloth or ... This continued throughout his first year of
life and into much of his second, although obviously the reflex reduced over
time. For the first year he could not sleep touching a bed, he slept in my
arms across my body. ( and yes I developed the most incredible biceps as he
was a BIG baby.) He is now almost 17 years old and is just fine with nothing
to indicate this challenging start. He is in fact extremely flexible.
