I am Cindy Dexter, an L.C. and Clinical Nurse Specialist, Director of a
Lactation Clinic in New Hampshire. I have been attempting to keep up with
Lactnet for several weeks now and have to confess that I have failed. I am now
in need for some of that hard to find information - and where else to turn?
I have been referred a Mom with a now 3 month old infant with SWG. Infant in
25th% at birth, regained birth wt at 2 wks, found below the 5th% at 8 wks, just
short of the 10th% at 11 wks when supplements were responsibly added and Mom
was referred to me. She MAY have some clinical signs of a reduced supply-
unsettled infant, test wt of 83 cc after good feed, but its hard to say! We
are supplementing for a few days with Mom's exp. milk and an SNS at every other
fdg.
No significant hx EXCEPT -- at 6 wks she saw a chiropractor for headaches and
he put her on: Biomega Oil (B complex vits), Bio-Multi (multi-vit),
Porphyra-zyme ( the chiropracters assistant told me this is to detoxify the
colon but she would not give me any component info- told me to go look it up!
WHERE??? She then terminated the phone call). At 8 wks when Mom was concerned
about babies growth he added Borage Oil (galactogogue - but more B vits?) and
Maritine Oil (?more B vits).
Any info to document that this regime affected either milk supply or infant
metabolism would be very helpful. I also think detoxifying the colon during
lactation is probably not a good idea. I would like to suggest Mom
discontinues ALL supplements until infant is on track. I do not like to
interfere with another practitioners regime but his office was not up for
discussing much of anything. Pediatrician is currently not aware Mom is on
these supplements but I think he'll support this - I have a great relationship
with the peds and FPs.
I would appreciate any references or info via Lactnet or privately at Cynthia
K. [log in to unmask]
Thanks!!
