Hi Bev!
Re: non-prescription treatment for nipple thrush. How about (after feeds):
- baking soda solution (1 teaspoon in 1 cup water: from Bestfeeding)
- dilute tea tree oil: a couple of drops in one third cup water (watch for
irritation of the nipples) [is tea tree oil available in the US?]
- calendula ointment (recommended by naturopaths)
- vinegar solution (personally I think this is too smelly -might put baby off)
- I don't like yogurt on the nipples (lactobacilli are not normal skin
flora), but mother can eat natural plain yoghurt
- mother can eat garlic (natural antibiotic); she should decrease refined
sugars, yeast and alcohol in her diet
- finally, airing nipples, leaving bra off.
Her homeopath would have other remedies too.
