I wouldn't suspect thrush with the mom with tender nipples (tender being a
euphemism for toe curling pain, you understand).  If she has had extremely
sensitive nipples all her life, then it will probably be a matter of just
waiting to see if she can "tough it out."  when I've seen sore nipples
described like you did with no evidence of trauma and what appears to be a
perfect latch & suckle, I always ask about her history.  Some moms are able
to deal with it and eventually the pain subsides; others just can't take it.
 Some of these moms can't even tolerate using a hospital grade elec. br.
pump.  I wonder if that's where they myth of the red-headed ladies (and
inevitable sore nipples) came from.  (Sounds like a Sherlock Holmes
title....)
