Becky -
I was hired full-time in a salary position as the L.C., with the option of
being able to pick up extra hours as a staff nurse if I needed the extra
money. I did choose to work an extra shift per week or every other week as a
staff RN about a month ago with the understanding (from my manager) that
because it would be over 40 hours (I usually work about 52) that it would be
time and a half. How silly of me. They classify me as an exempt employee,
which means under NO circumstances can I make overtime with my LC hours, even
if it in a different job classification, unles I was to work my 40 hours + 40
hours as the staff nurse. Then I would be eligible for OT pay. I would be
making $2/hr less being a staff nurse than I make as the LC. It obviously
makes no sense to work 60 hours if the last 8 are going to be at quite a
lower rate. So the unit remains quite short staffed. It makes no sense to
me. But I guess I am lucky to be able to say that I do make more hourly than
a staff nurse. And your LPN who is working as the LC SHOULD be making what
all of the LC's make.
