Pat,

Maybe this mother can try a sugar free diet for a couple of weeks.  No
refined sugar.  She will have to read labels!
Sugar depresses the immune system for up to five hours after consuming it.
 If she eats it throughout the day she may be suppressing her immune system
and her ability to fight off infection.

Just a thought.
