Ferquently I see moms trying to get a breastfed baby to take one of the
pacifiers because their mother, nurse, or doctor warned the mom not to let
her breast be "used like a pacifier." I will usually explain why it is not
only ok, but desireable for babies to have all of their sucking needs met at
the breast. I also expalin why bottle fed babies who are deprived of normal
sucking need the pacifier. I also give them a line to use which has worked
fairly well. The baby can no more use the breast as a pacifier than it can
use a womb as an incubator. Often the rediculous(sp?) idea of the normal
being replaced by a second rate substitute gets grandma thinking.....
