Hello' Netters,
I need some help! I have a mother who is breastfeeding her 7 month old infant.
Since Thanksgiving ,yes I said thanksgiving she has been having problems with
sore nipples. In Nov. she thought she had a yeast infection so was treated for
yeast. The nipples improved enough to make her believe that she was* almost
cured*. Then the soreness came back about 3 weeks later. She was given another
Rx for medication and again her nipples were better but not totally cured. Then
in January the same problem and the M.D. saw her and said she thought it was an
infection soshe was put on antibiotics. Again she improved but never completely
cured.
Well I talked this week and she said I just have to give up nursing as the pain
is too painful. She then added that she has ezema on her hands and that she
used a small amount of her cortisone cream on her nipples after a couple of
feedings and her nipples were the best they have been in months. She also said
she has seen a correlation between the ezema of her hands and the problem with
her nipples. Well I am no rocket scientist but I said HMM I think you need to
see a dermatologist and get this problem addressed. So whats the problem? Well
this mom can't get in to see the dermatologist for a couple of weeks. So tonite
I recieved a call from her attending HCP and she said did I have any ideas on
what to use on these nipples on till she is able to see a dermatologist?
In Tom Hales book, (which is wonderful by the way) he writes that cortisone
should not be used as a topical on the nipple because of absorption by the
infant. I didn't know she was having trouble until this week. She had been
dealing directly with the M.D. So can someone give me some ideas? is there some
medication she might use that can keep her going until she is able to see the
dermatologist?
Thanks you are all so good!
