As I stated in my introduction, I am currently looking for additional funds
to support the continuation of the Breastfeeding Support Project. Our
current funding ends May 31, 1996. We provide services to WIC clients in
Pima County (Tucson, AZ). Our clients are almost all Hispanic and about
half of them are Spanish-speaking only. The project provides support and
education to these clients throuhg Paraprofessional and Peer breastfeeding
counselors who do home, hospital, and phone visits. Of the women who have
receied our services, 44% have breastfed 6 months or longer (compared to 12%
nationwide for WIC moms) so we are successful. 65% of the moms currently
breastfeeding are doing so exclusively. I will be working with our state
health department to look for more funds but thought I would put it out to
all of you in case someone knows of possible sources of funding. I did put
in a proposal to U.S.D.A. Food and Consumer Services this past summer but
was turned down. We would like to continue providing services in Pima County
(urban) and also expand to a rural county in Arizona. Any leads would be
greatly appreciated.
