Dr. Zimmer
Please accept this as a public appology for the controversy I have stirred
up. I am so glad that the researchers will be looking at breastfeeding as a
protective factor. The clip just didn't give enough information to truly
reflect the research.
Since Kathleen Dettwyler already posted the clip from the paper here on
Lactnet I will respond to your question about what upset me, here, in this
public forum.
I think what pushed a big button was the "Culprit" idea of kissing and face
to face contact that was presented in this little clip.[Plus, a few months
ago I was told by a pediatric dentist that my child needed $ 2500.00 in
dental work because I was selfish enough to nurse her past one year of age.
She was 3 when SHE weaned]
The clip seemed-on face value alone- to be implying that cuddling and
kissing kids was bad (with a big mommy tooth cuddling and kissing a little
baby tooth) .
If one read the entire article it was clear to see that the study is in the
planning state. As I said in my origional post >>What really angers me is
that this looks someone's theory that has yet to be proven, but is put in the
paper like its already fact. Few people will get past the headline.<< This is
not the fault of the study, but that of the newspaper presenting the
information.
Again I appologize. I am a zealot for breastfeeding and a voice for children
and every once in a while, I open my mouth to merely change feet.
Sheepishly,
Marie Davis
