I just got a call from a mom of a nursing 18 mo old boy. Her doctor told her
he suspects she has a hyperactive thyroid and told her she needs to wean
immediately. She has a test on Thursday which I gave involves drugs
incompatible with nursing, plus he said she could not bf while taking the
drugs needed to control her thyroid.
I've just finished reading the new edition of Ruth Lawrence and Counseling
the Nursing Mother. I understand the the drug PTU is compatible with
nursing, but we are still concerned about this test. Is there another way to
test her without weaning? If not how long does she need to pump and dump?
Her doctor, of course, thinks she being hysterical to make such a scene
about weaning an 18 mo old, but she is a very dedicated mom and neither she
nor the baby are ready to wean. Any suggestions for this mom? I need to
hear ASAP!
Also, how do we access the archives and is there any way to access it by
subject? I feel like otherwise we'll be asking the same questions over and
over again when they've already been discussed.
Thanks so much for your help, fellow Lactnetters!
