Barbara,

Your comment re problems with the suck (maybe) being a marker for later
problems was interesting. One of my LC friends who is going into school
nursing (for family reasons) is taking a course on special ed. Her
assignment is to spend at least 40 hours in a variety of places that care for
special ed kids (in the school). She's been to preK and K so far, and said
that both the teachers she worked with commented that one of the first things
the mothers will remember about their children - even before anything else
has shown up - is that the babies had problems bf. Either they couldn't
latch on, or in the case of a couple of the autistic children, absolutely
refused to breastfeed AT ALL. Screamed and backed off, and refused any type
of close relationship with the mother. Obviously, not every baby who
exhibits that type of behavior is going to turn out to be autistic; not every
baby who has difficulty with latch on & suck is going to end up in special
ed. for a neurological problem. But it behooves us to be aware of the
potential -- that maybe this sucking problem we are seeing is not JUST a
sucking problem, but is a harbinger of things to come.

Your comments about the pacifer were great - I particularly like your
analysis of using the NUK.
