Hi All,
I got to sit in on a facsinating consult today. A mom came in today to our
WIC office for a consult. She has one of our breastpumps to use to help try
and build up a milk supply. However she didn't like the pump. She wants to
use an SNS with her baby, which as it turns out is all she can do.
This gal presents with small breasts, small masculine areolas, and LONG
nipples. One nipple is at least 1in long and the other must be at least 1
1/2 in long. (It droops!) She has practically no glandular tissue. We did
a before and after BF weight check on the baby and he got only about 5 grams
of mama milk. I was surprised that he was able to taks her nipples since
they are so long. But, when she was discussing the SNS with the LC, the baby
needed feeding, so I got to do the honors. This little boy took that nipple
(NUK) all the way in! His lips were touching the bottle cap! Lips nicely
flanged aroung the nipple, too. A beautiful baby!
When the LC explained to the mom that she just didn't have enough glandular
tissue to make enough milk, she was sad, but understood. This consult was
made more difficult because the mom is deaf, as is he hubby who was there,
and we had no translator! We had fun writing tho! They are a wonderful
couple, and it turns out this is their 5th baby. 2 of the older sibs had
been fed at breast using the SNS. I'm not sure how long tho. I forgot to
ask.
Anyway, just had to tell you about this case. I never thought I'd see this
type of case this early in my BF career. I know that these situations are
not really common, so I was grateful that the mom allowed me to sit in on the
consult. She even allowed us to take a picture. She really is a nice lady!
Well, thanks for listening!
Jay
