Diane Wiessinger's forwarded post about chewing food for infants reminded
me of a story I heard about a mother who mixed some baby cereal with her
breastmilk to give to her baby. She had put the bowl in the microwave oven
to warm the cereal a little, but had got distracted for a while. When she
returned, the cereal in the bowl had gone clear. Apparently the amylase
enzyme in the breastmilk had digested the starch in the cereal as it had
sat there nice and warm!! So I guess a message here could be that a baby
fed cereal and breastmilk together would be able to digest the cereal more
efficiently than if the cereal was mixed with formula, cow's milk or water.
