Got a call from a mom nursing a 13 mo old. Mom wants flu shot due to past
hist. of pneumonia. Baby however recently had severe reaction (trip to er
with total body swelling) to egg. Mom has eaten eggs during the whole time
she's been nursing, but this was 1st direst exposure of baby to egg. As flu
vaccine is grown in egg, and as the reaction to eating egg followed by 1 week
an MMR shot (that vaccine also cultured in egg) the mothers docs have advised
her to forego flu shots in case egg protein from shot coming thru milk will
again trigger allergic reaction in baby. Whew.

I told her I wasn't sure about this and would post to see if anyone has a
more informed opinion. My thinking is the risk of her contracting pneumonia
again is smaller than the risk to the baby of allergic shock. What do you
all think?
