Melissa and all:

I agree with you that LLL should stay non-political. When I had my first
child and she was nipple confused by the pacifiers and bottles she got in the
hospital I was not interested in changing hospital policies, only in getting
help. I was desperate and in tears and sure that my baby hated me because
she wouldn't nurse. I think the mother-to-mother help that LLL offers is
important. When I started attending meetings I talked with other mothers who
had gone through the same experiences and I learned about breastfeeding and
parenting. Gradually I became more interested in the political aspects of
breastfeeding and today I work with other groups to try to change attitudes
and policies. I do not do this as a LLL Leader but as a "civilian". There
are many good groups and causes that we can be affiliated with but I do not
feel that they should be promoted by LLLI or mentioned at LLL meetings. LLL,
unfortunately, is still trying to overcome the "radical" stigma which can
sometimes prevent moms from seeking help from us and being linked to other
causes may further purpetuate that stigma. There is plenty of work to be
done to make breastfeeding the norm in our society and LLL does it's part by
helping each mom to breastfeed her baby. I am content with that role.
Besides, you never know which new mom will become a zealot in a few years -
I did!
