For what it's worth, I recommend that moms wash all contact parts with
hot soapy water, and tell them that sterilization is at their discretion.
I do not recommend routine sterilization or even washing of the tubing
because it take so long for it to dry, and yet, it turns opaque and looks
awful after being boiled. IMHO, there is little risk of contaminating
breastmilk by air pulled through the tubing, and I agree with Jan: it's
probably more a CYA type of thing. After all, we don't tell bottlefeeding
moms to boil all equipment anymore; a good dishwasher cycle is adequate
for most full term, healthy babies.
I suppose that I should add that, if the baby is premature or ill, I do
absolutely recommend sterilization procedures daily.....
