I don't know of any references regarding breastfeeding after splenectomy,
but some of the things that were told to this mother just make no sense.
After a splenectomy, the main risk is overwhelming infection with
pneumococcus bacteria, so anyone who has had a splenectomy should get
pneumovax vaccine. Otherwise, I am not aware of any activities that are
contraindicated, and breastfeeding doesn't seem likely as a risk. The
mere assumption that breastfeeding will "knock her out" and will be
exhausting shows a lack of understanding of the process. Breastfeeding
mothers actually by the very nature of the act tend to sit down and rest,
and with their generally healthier babies tend to be less stressed. We
used to have a contest on Lactnet for "most ridiculous reason to wean".
Unless someone knows something I don't, this may be a candidate.
