Can anyone give references about nursing and Depakote. My wife, Becky, LLLL,
IBCLC, received a call from a mother that is now pregnant and due in APril
and currently takes Depakote due to a fairly severe seizure disorder. The
mother was concerned tat if the Depakote was harmful to the infant
intrauterine that she did not want to expsose the infant to anymore drug
after delivery. As I understand from the PRD and R. Lawerence's book the
great danger with the drug is in the early stages of pregnancy when
organogensis is occuring and not as great later in Preg. nor when nursing.
It seems to me that the many advantages of MM(Mother's Milk) would outway
the risk of the Depakote in small concentractions in the milk. Does anyone
especially Dr. Hale have anything else to add that would help reassure this
mother that it is OK to take the Depakote and BF. TIA
