Katherine,

Glad to hear you and Cathy are working on an article on guilt!
How about interviewing older mothers who were talked out of
breastfeeding because they were made to feel guilty about
NOT feeding their babies the new, MODERN way (ABM) ?

Example-- earlier this week I gave a flu shot to a 68 year old
white female. She noticed my poster of a nursing baby,
remarked how nice it was to see something positive about
breastfeeding and shared that she'd breastfed ALL her babies.
During her 4th pregnancy, 40 years ago, her OB asked her
if she was planning on nursing her 4th baby. When she answered
in the affirmative, the doctor admonished her with "Why would you
want to do that? Only PEASANT women breastfeed!" She nursed
the 4th AND the 5th babies anyway. However, she'll never forget that
doctor's remark. In addition to a flu shot, she left my office with LLLI's
1995 list of breastfeeding benefits and her promise to write our local
newspaper about a negative letter they'd recently printed about nursing
in public. (SHE read this, I missed it.)

Love to nurture those seeds,
Diana Dietz
