Dear Penelope,
There are many folks assisting mothers, and much overlap in roles. In 1994,
ILCA and LLLI developed a paper that was submitted to the US DHHS describing
in detail the differences and similarities in Peer Counselor, LLL Leader, and
IBCLC roles. In a nutshell, Leaders support mothers through mother-to-mother
help and support group meetings and mostly deal with explaining and
supporting normal BF. LCs provide 1:1 clinical support, mostly during times
of crises. Of course there's more to this that two sentences can convey, and
much overlap. e-mail me privately if you want more details. I'll try to find
out if this joint report is still available.
