When my son, who was born in Norway, was about a week old, the health sister
came to the house to visit. She looked at the changing and bathing area.
She stayed and had coffee, and was there to watch a nursing session. She
made sure that I had good literature to read on breastfeeding and the phone
# of ammenhjelp- the Norwegian breastfeeding support organization. Before
she left, the sister made sure that we had a follow up appointment for a
well baby visit to the clinic. My son was checked out by the same health
sister every month for the first year of his life and then every couple of
months after that. The baby was only seen by a doctor (and the sister) for
his one month, six month, one year and 18 month check ups. Ten years
later, even though we haven't been back to Norway we keep in touch with that
sister- Darcy is one of "her babies". Nancy Sherwood - Mom of 5 kids- born
