I have been talking to my husband, who teaches high school, about the
discussion of role changes that teen moms face. As a nurse in a mother-baby
unit, I work with moms immediately postpartum and women (girls) with
antepartum complications. There are a few who breastfeed and go back to
school. One school has an electric pump which the moms can use.

We feel that the ideal situation would be to have the teen mom return to
school and have in-school child care involving the moms. Many teen moms have
a multitude of social problems. They often do not find success in school, and
would be unlikely to go back to school at night.

It would be useful for other students taking Home Ec, especially child
development, to see what babies are really like. Programs do exist for teen
moms to improve their success as parents and academically. These programs
involve a lot of work and some financing, which is probably why there are so
few programs.
