Diana posted about an article telling us that breastmilk helps set us up to
love candy. The same mom who didn't want a nipple confused baby is not going
to breastfeed because she doesn't want her kid to love candy. I wasn't sure
if Diana liked the article or not. I thought it could have been worded
differently. I didn;t like the candy analogy too much.
Here;s another story about how we make mothers feel guilty for not
breastfeeding: one of the HIV peer educators at our center was looking at my
wonderful breastfeeding posters: I had taken the Ameda Egnell and Medela
breastfeeding posters and put captions on them. The Medela poster has mom
looking lovingly at her breastfeeding baby; I cut out two arrows, one going
up to mom from baby, and one from mom's brain back down to baby. (interactive
system concept...) Mom has a thought balloon: I'm glad my body works so
well. Baby has a thought balloon: Yummy! Mommy's milk is just right for my
little tummy!
So this HIV peer educator is studying the poster and comes over to me.
Hooray, I thought, someone is admiring the poster...She says: You know, when
I look at this, I feel bad for the mothers who are HIV+ because their bodies
don't work well! This conversation took place a while ago, but I think she
implied that I was making the mothers feel bad, too, and that maybe the
poster isn't a good idea!!!!
Any thoughts?
