Are there any guidelines in use by hospitals for anesthesiologists for
lactating women? I was called by a mother who was upset when her surgeon
told her she would not be able to breastfeed her toddler for 48 hours
after surgery because of the anesthetic. It is not an issue for
breastfeeding moms receiving general anesthesia for a cesarean section.
The BF Answer Book says moms can breastfeed after surgery as soon as they
can hold their babies. I would like to approach our dept. of anesthesia
with references.

I am a new hospital based lactation consultant in Philadelphia, nursing
mothers counselor for 13 years, and mother of 3 children who are proud
that they were breastfed. Thank you for this forum!
