I too, saw the Culligan advertisement and have already written my
letter. Another thing that I have seen that really drives me nuts,
especially as a dietitian, are all the advertisements in TV, print,
etc. for "formulas" for all ages - from seniors (who on TV look like
they are hardly even 50!) to people who don't have time for lunch and
want something "specially formulated" from a can for lunch, to the
mom at home dealing with a vacume cleaner salesman at breakfast time,
to infants with diarrhea and of course the infamous ABM. As a
dietitian I am appalled that this is happening. Don't people trust
real food anymore? Are we too busy to pick up an apple and a quick
sandwich? Do elderly people need an extra boost, or are these
companies preying on their fears of old age and disease? Not to
mention our babies that are being force- fed an inferior product.
What about real, old-fashioned food? Sure, there are pitfalls in our
food choices, but everything in moderation. What do other dietitians
think? Is ADA doing anything in terms of position papers to these
drug companies? Does ADA still accept lots of freebies from these
companies? I gave up my membership in ADA many years ago, when I got
more involved in BF activities and organizations, but it seems to me
that ADA should be taking stands similar to ILCA with regard to some
of these issues and the drug companies. End of soap-box. Theresa
