Oh yes, the old "the LC told me this medicine was ok
to use while breastfeeding" line! Ouch!
I give out information all the time but I have learned to
do it by giving the patient the written documentation. I
say "Here's the information I have" or "I can send you
the references." If I suspect the patient will be at odds
with the health provider I tell her to show the info to
the provider. This way it is not me, but the references,
that are speaking.
For those of you who are younger than I, ;>) here's
what I have learned: speak to the physicians and
other health providers when you are able to do so.
You are a professional, too! (I see from postings that
some of you aren't quite sure of that.) Of course you
will meet opposition--there are some big, fragile egos
out there. But, if you are good-natured, allow others to
save face by your grace and always double check
your sources you will gain respect in the long run. I
have found that most providers are delighted to have
a colleague they can trust to know the answer to their
breastfeeding questions. Courage!
