Hi Deb McBain! Glad to have you join us!!
Interesting experience yesterday -- my 17 year old daughter came home for
lunch with one of her numerous boyfriends (age 18). (Don't ask - I still
haven't figured out why the high schools let them have "open lunch" but
better here than other places I can think of). At any rate, we were talking
about the SATs that Torrey is taking (again) today, and I commented to Mark
about bf and intelligence. He was totally blown away by the concept that
human milk could make a difference in IQ. I explained the Lucas study -- and
that led to discussions about why some moms have difficulty bf (and why I
exist as an LC). He couldn't figure it out -- "Why don't they just "do" it?
Why is there a problem?" It was a bit difficult getting into all the whys &
wherefores about problems with bf, but Torrey was quick to tell him about
babies getting messed up at birth with all the interventions -- "They come
out so stoned they don't know what to do." (I'm not sure I ever explained it
quite like that, but I guess that's the message she got). Mark was quick to
tell us he was bf -- I assured him that was one of the reasons he's so
smart....
Torrey's parting comment on the use of formula -- "Well, did you ever see a
smart cow?" (See, Linda Smith - your buttons are sticking!!).
It is amazing to me the opportunities that arise to talk about bf to all
sorts of people in a totally non-threatening environment. Knowing Mark, I
suspect this information will be taken truly to heart, and I would be amazed
that if and when the time comes, he doesn't "insist" his wife bf!
