Hi, 'netters: I have a new twist to the iron question. A local
pediatrician has suggested that low-iron ABM's should be taken off the
market because despite attempts at education of the public and
physicians, a significant proportion of babies are still being fed
low-iron ABM's. My question is whether there are any data about possible
interference with the functioning of lactoferrin in breast milk if
breastfed babies are supplemented with iron-fortified ABM, resulting in
potential decrease of the anti-infective properties. Having read about
this potential problem, I had been advising moms who supplement (yes, I
do try to work on increasing their own supply and exclusively bf, but the
reality currently is that some will supplement anyway) to use low-iron
ABM. If anyone has references about this, it would provide a reason for
keeping low-iron ABM on the shelves. TIA, Alicia. [log in to unmask]
