Hi Netters and esp. Kathy Dettwyler,
Regarding physical discipline with a spoon and progressing to a belt as
taught by some "parenting programs" - that is considered in many states to
constitute child abuse, pure and simple, and the parents can be arrested.
For excellent reading on physical punishment and its grim rewards, I
recommend Alice Miller's "For Your Own Good: Hidden Cruelty in child-rearing
and the roots of violence." She also wrote Thou Shalt Not Be Aware:
society's betrayal of the child" and "Prisoners of Childhood" - the paperback
version title is The Drama of the Gifted Child. After just reading the table
of contents, I vowed to never, never hit a child for any reason whatsoever.
