I received a call about weaning recently and would appreciate your
thoughts. This mom asked when does weaning occur? If you are
weaning naturally and define weaning as the total cessation of
breastfeeding, when does that occur? If the child is only nursing
once a week or once a month is he still nursing? Are you still a
breastfeeding mother? Is this important? It sure seemed to be for
this mom! If the child says he is still nursing does that count?
Does it matter whether you have milk or not? I had a difficult time
with this call because I am in the same stage. My husband says my son
has weaned but falls off the wagon occasionally. Periodic relapses. I
think I'll know when we weaned in retrospect. I wondered if there
were marital or custody issues or if she wanted to engage in some
unhealthy practices??? I know that weaning is always an emotional
issue and there seems always to be a sense of loss no matter how
ready you are to wean, but I was at a loss for a response. I'd
appreciate your thoughts. TIA, Cathy
