I saw 60 moms and babies yesterday and two of them are driving me nuts, This
was my week for horrible engorgement cases. Both moms are at what I call the
severe engorgement stage (breasts are hard, firm, not lumpy-- like a Barbie
doll) Both were c/s moms with 32 wk premies and have been pumping q 2 hrs
around the clock with a commercial electric pump since day 1. (the hot
weather here had brought about a rash of preterm births, 10 in the last 5
days)
I've tried moist heat, ice packs, cabbage and sage tea-- all with no
discernable effect on the engorgement. Very little milk can be pumped 4 oz
max and the breasts are still hard and painful.
These moms need help quick-- if they stay this engorged much longer I'm
afraid that we'll lose the supply.
Any other ideas?
