Donna,
If the infant's problem is truly lactose intolerance, mom might be able to
breastfeed if she drips a few drops of lactase enzyme on her nipple
immediately before latching baby on.  This will only work if the case is not
severe, because lactase takes some time to work, and does not cleave 100% of
the milk's lactose.
We do have a GI wonderdoc here, Maryelle, hope she's listening.
