Kathy: I'm sure someone with more details will answer, but having seen
some messages go unanswered for days (I believe that the volume has
become so overwhelming that people are just not getting around to reading
everything in time), I'll give you what I know. The United States, after
having been the only country not to sign on the first time (I believe
early 1980's), finally did sign on in 1994. I don't know who actually
signed. As for the abbreviations: BFHI = Baby-Friendly Hospital
Initiative (the original WHO/Unicef); BfHI = Breastfeeding Health
Initiative (the watered down version in the United States, not approved
by most breastfeeding advocacy organizations - this was recently
discussed on Lactnet); WABA = World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action;
NABA = National Alliance for Breastfeeding Advocacy (I think!) - recently
formed to lobby the US government on breastfeeding legislation; IBFAN I'm
really going out on a limb on, at risk of totally getting egg on my face,
it's the International Baby Food Action Network, which Action for
Corporate Accountability is a part of. I hope that clarifies some of it
for you. Alicia. [log in to unmask]
