I have a drug inquiry: Glucophage (metformin hydrochloride) for a bfg mom
with non-IDDM. This drug was newly approved by the FDA in December, and
the package insert says that it is excreted into milk similar to plasma
levels. There is no current pediatric usage as the drug is used for
adult-onset diabetes. The "baby" in question is 4 yrs old, 40 lbs, and
bfds 4X a day. (my gut says that she should be fine, but I do wonder on
behalf of mothers with younger babies). Does anyone have some definitive
data regarding the appropriate use of this drug in bfg moms?
TIA,
-Lisa
