Some of the features of teens include self-absorption, concern about body
image and a feeling that everyone is watching them. For teenage girls,
these concerns have to be addressed, and dealing with their worry that
breastfeeding might make their breasts less attractive and the issue of
exposing themselves in public is very important. Another approach that
helps is an emphasis about how breastfeeding is something only they can
do for their baby, and that makes them special to their baby. I recall
reading (I'm sure I'll never remember the reference!) that although teen
mothers have a significantly lower breastfeeding rate, it is mostly a
factor of poor education and lower socioeconomic status; that teens who
have adequate education and support breastfeed at equal rates as adult
mothers. Hope this helps. Alicia. [log in to unmask]
