A client's baby was hospitalized at 6 weeks for failure to thrive - she
thought the "parenting curriculum" with scheduled feedings and sleeping
through sounded like a good idea because her other kids woke at night and she
thought baby #4 could be different. Took us 3 weeks to get her supply back
up and baby thriving again - scared the daylights out of her. She went to
her pastor and gave him what-for, and insisted the curriculum be removed from
the church library.
The of notion of separate sleep as being a "good thing" evolved is chilling
and fascinating, and closely parallels the development of artificial feeding
and promiscuous sexuality in the late 1800's.
