Responding to Lisa's note today on Depo and BF, I do agree with you about
not recommending hormones as the preferred method of birth control in the
breastfeeding woman, however the population that I work with is very much
at risk for another pregnancy and do not follow all the recommendations
that their health providers,, in their wisdom will give. In fact the woman
that I had in mind when I wrote to Lactnet was 19 and had just had her
fourth baby. She did not have custody of the oldest--she had a history of
drug use but was clean for this baby--she was not married. Breastfeeding
was going great and her baby was gaining very well. She had been given the
Depo in the hospital before they knew that Medicaid would not reimburse. I
think that you will agree that there is a place for Depo with woman who are
so at risk for a repeat pregnancy. Barriers methods must be used to work!
Many women will use them-the nurses in our family planning clinic get to
know their clients and make recommendations based on that info.
