Debby,
Any gift pack is a form of captive audience advertising. It is a great way to
target a population who will need your product, build good will, and throw
lots of propaganda at them at the same time. As such, I did not feel at all
guilty removing all of the advertising and just giving moms the samples, and
sometimes the magazines. I read every word first for both accuracy and tone.
I remember a pregnancy mag given out to members of ICEA a few years ago that
had an article on preg discomforts by a male ob/gyn. It was very pathology
based. Nothing about adaptation to pregnancy and the wonderful reasons our
bodies do what they do, and how to work with it to minimize discomfort.
Remember that these companies are using you to get to your clients and
decide whether the benefits to your clients (goodies) outweigh the risks
(propaganda or misinformation) or vice-versa.
