This is the third time I've tried to send this message I hope it works this
time
Everyone who is interested in approaching a doctor about breastfeeding issues
to trying to covert them, or to make them more BF friendly, should get a copy
of the August 1995 FPR Family Practice Recertification journal. Vol. 17,
no.8. Pages 32-53 contain an excellant article by Lani Ackerman, MD of the
John Peter Smith Family Practice REsidency Program of Fort Worth, Texas.
I'll quote two lines from her introductory paragraph:
" It is essential for physcians to promote and help mothers maintain
lactaion. Here are practical tips on how to do this in a busy office
practice."
I think this article would be good for LC,RD, nurses who need to deal with
DRS. that are not as BF friendly as they could be. It also may be good for
patients to get copies to give to their doctors. As we all know many
physicians are not as informed as they should be on this topic and some might
have an ego problem because they think they need to know everything and if
they don't it is easier to say "Give a bottle/formula." then to admit they
don't know how to manage the problem. I can be critical of my peers since I
am a FP. Even though we know the good that LLL has done to further the
efforts of BF among many physicians I have heard them talk about the radical
mothers, zealots, etc. , but that's another topic. I think that this
article is good to approach physicans with because it is by a physician so
others doctors who are predjudiced against League & Co. can be more open to
information from peers.
The articles contains tables of the Ten Steps from WHO, Ten steps for
physcians to promote BF, Common problems of BF and simple management
treatments, Management step for jaundice, common drugs compatible with BF,
and a list for patient information resources.
If anybody has contacts in Fort Worth perhaps they could contact Dr. Ackerman
and see if she would like to joint LACTNET and share her efforts with us.
