The article Doulas, Confidence and the Science of Lactation by Derrick
Jelliffe and E.F. Patrice Jelliffe (J. Pediatr. 84: 462-464, 1974) is a
favorite of mine, an oldie but goodie, and maybe Kittie Frantz read it too.
I found it as a reprint in the Nursing Mothers Association of Australia
Newsletter in the days when I was a mere mother who soaked up everything on
breastfeeding. The article refers to the authors' belief that *confidence is
the key in regard to the let-down reflex*.

The distinguished Jelliffes were staunch breastfeeding advocates and it's an
excellent article which 21 years later is still so on target that I hand it
out at my pre-natal classes and new mothers groups. The NMAA reprint is
possibly abridged but if anyone would like a copy, just e-mail me.

Beverley Rae, NSW CSW IBCLC
Manhasset, NY who hoards stuff from years ago because she's sure it will come
in useful eventually.

Subject: Re: confidence as key to milk supply

The article Doulas, Confidence and the Science of Lactation by Derrick B.
Jelliffe and E.F. Patrice Jelliffe (J. Pediatr. 84: 462-464, 1974 ) is
probably the source of Kittie Franz's statement that bf is a confidence game.
The article which I read as a reprint in the Nursing Mothers Association of
Australia Newsletter refers to the authors' belief that*confidence is the key
in regard to the let-down reflex*.

The distinguished Jelliffes were staunch breastfeeding advocates and it's an
excellent article which 21 years later is still so on target that I hand it
out at my pre-natal classes and new mothers groups. The NMAA reprint is
possibly abridged but if anyone would like a copy, just e-mail me privately
