If fecal leucocytes are present, they suggest that an inflammatory process
is going on, possibly caused by Clostridium difficile, Campylobacter
jejuni, or other bacteria. The presence of fecal leucocytes is often used
to differentiate these causes of diarrhea from noninflammatory causes
(rotavirus, Norwalk-like virus, enterotoxigenic E. coli). Has the
pediatrician cultured for possible micro-organisms?
