Dear Denise, and whoever else may be wondering
I have checked with our infectious disease faculty here in Little Rock.
This person is on most of the AAP committees and CCD groups. The final
word is as I said in my previous posting
Yes Hep B can be transmitted via Breastfeeding
BUT IF BABY GETS IMMUNOGLOBULIN AND VACCINE BREASTFEEDING PRESENTS NO
RISK. I insist they have to get prophyllaxis in order for BF to present
no risk!!!!! There has been no posting from the AAP to the effect of
delaying BF for 48 hours for the prophyllaxis to work. This makes no
sense and has no scientific basis plus is not recommended by the AAP.
A word of caution: depending on the brand of vaccine, a company
recommends using smaller doses of vaccine for babies of non infected
mothers. These smaller doses are not appropriate for babies of infected
mothers. Make sure the specs of each vaccine are checked to be sure the
correct dose is given.
Another word of caution: Vaccine alone as prophyllaxis for babies of
infected mothers (whether they BF or not) is NOT sufficient.
Immunoglobulin HAS TO be used preferably asap after birth.
