Hello my lactnet friends
My eyes have brimmed with the threat of tears many times over the past few days
- and I find myself pondering the discussion of sleeping with our children which
has been flowing around in this neighbourhood. You see - a few nights ago - in
the city of Surrey (part of the Greater Vancouver Regional District ) - a 20
year old man snuck into his neighbour's house- through a small window on the
ground floor in the wee hours of the morning while the family within slept .
He took with him - their VCR, their TV, some cash, the keys to the family car,
the car, - and the 10 year old Melissa, who was sleeping in her bedroom nextdoor
to her parents. The parents, the family dogs and the other children slept.
By lunchtime, the police found the car, the man, the VCR, the TV - and Melissa -
she had been sexually assaulted and strangled to death with a bungy cord.
I tucked my 9 year old into her bed last night - turned the security system on
after checking every door and window in the house. I did not kennel my
protective miniature schnauzer. And I lay awake all night afraid to go to sleep
- and was filled with rage and anquish that a little girl is not safe at home -
tucked in her bed.
That is all. I thought I would tell my friends out there - Shannon will be
sleeping with me tonight.....
