Judy, We must be running a special on odd shaped nipples today! I have a
mom who's nipple flanged out at the ends. She was determined to bf but
noone gave her my name or number and her nipples got so sore and raw,
with bleeding that she quit after one month. Of course her mom helped
with that decision too cuz of course she had the same problem and
"almost died". Good grief!
She happened to call the birth center when I was on L/D and I jsut
happended to answer the phone that day. She had had the baby on
formula x for 8 days and she was fussy and constipated. Shen she was
bf she slept well and was very content and now she cried all the time.
She wanted to know if I thought formula Y might be better. At that
point I told her who I was and asked why she had quit. After
hearing her story and her sadness while telling it I asked her
if she still wanted to bf. She was delighted. (her mom had gone back
home across the country) After 8 days of formula her nipples had
healed over completely but she was still making milk. After only
a brief period of suplements she was back to bf full time with no
pain (after helping her with her latch and positioning baby for
comfort) and baby gained almost a pound the next week. This is week
three after going back to bf and waiting for me at work yesterday
was a plant and lovely card of thanks that made me glad I was
who I am even if I don't get paid for it.

sorry so long.

Becky B.
