I spend a lot of time telling parents how to know their babies are
getting enough to eat and are not getting dehydrated. This discussion
arises during prenatal breastfeeding classes, warm-line queries from
anxious parents, home visits and in follow-up conversations with
pediatricians.

I'm clear about the guidelines from day 3-4 onward (as enumerated in
the "Warning Signs" published in the ILCA Globe compliments of Jan
Barger/Linda Kutner) but I could use some clarification on appropriate
output and warning signs for the first 2 to 3 days of life. I've heard
quite a range of opinions from pediatricians--from very laid back to
conservative. I tend to be more conservative, especially if all I
have to go on is a telephone conversation with the mother.

Thanks,

Bev Solow
