I have recently joined LACTNET and find the information shared Great! Thanks!
I live in Gainesville, Florida. An IBCLC almost 1 year now and also an
ICEA childbirth educator (not actively teaching CB because my LC job is over
fulltime!) My hospital is a private LDRP unit and I stay busy with
inpatients and outpatients and a level 2 SCN. I teach 2 prenatal classes a
month, facilitate 1 Working Mothers Breastfeeding class and facilitate a
weekly postpartum support group - luncheon. The luncheon is great! Babies are
ages 3wks. to 16wks. This helped our hospital to be in the top 10 that was
published in Child's Magazine, March '95, and I have an extra copy of it for
whoever requested it. I don't have or can't find the persons address on the
lactnet things we have downloaded. My husband is the computer wiz in the
family but I think that Lactnet will help to make me more computer wise.
Today I came across a challanging couple. Baby is 6 days old. Very
difficult delivery. Tight Nuchal X2. Apgars 2/5. In our special care unit.
Colostrum given via bottle on day 2. Baby very irritable and unable to latch
on so mom continued to pump to get milk in. Baby D/C'd home on day four
recieving expressed breastmilk via bottle. This is mother's 2nd baby. She
breastfed her first for 1 year. Came for an office visit today because baby
continues to fight at the breast. Baby's weight today was 8-2 and birth
weight was 7-14. When put to breast in cradle hold baby gets nipple and a few
soft sucks and then starts to scream. Mom has good milk supply and MER. Baby
does not like any pressure on head to move to breast. Dislikes football and
sidelying holds. I feel like there is a possible birth trauma and/or pain
involvment. Baby takes bottle well (too well !) and sucks finger well. Tounge
does more sliding than compressing and cupping. Mom is committed to
breastfeeding but her home situation is stressful with an active 2 y/o and a
semi - supportive husband. I'm afraid of getting hooked on finger feeding as
this has happened to me in the past. I tried cup feeding and the baby
screamed with the cup. The Peds that saw him today said that she was doing
great. Mom is not too happy with the Doc because he didn't ask many questions
and did not see the baby in the hospital ( he lives in another town) . This
is difficult to get all the info in writing. Hope it is clear enough for all
of you to understand. Any ideas, suggestions, referrals ? Thanks for any help
!
