Hi everyone. I only received the last couple of notes on this
subject, so don't know the original question, but would like to
bring up a possibility. Before diagnosed with hyperthyroidism,
a young woman I know had a drop in Hb (9.5), Hct (31%), Fe
(23mcg%), Fe saturation (4%), a typical pattern of iron
deficiency anemia, according to the hematologist. Dr. said that
she had had experience with pts with IDA who were later found to
be HYPOthyroid. This started me thinking that: since thyroid
disease (both hyper and hypo) often appear after childbirth and
are often underdiagnosed because symptoms are vague and often
subtle, perhaps postpartum women presenting with anemia and low
milk supply should be tested for thyroid function if there seems
to be no reasonable explanation?
