Claire, A one year old is old enough to be "retrained". Mom should ask her
not to bite, tell her that it's "ouchie" or "hurts" or whatever code they
use for pain, and then ask her to nurse nicely. If she laughs or refuses,
mom should tell her "no nursing until you can nurse nicely. Biting hurts
mommy". Etc, etc.
While we don't want to yell at babies and make that negative correlation,
neither do we want to go to the other extreme and tolerate painful or
uncomfortable behavior, either. It is reasonable to expect her to
latch on in a tolerable manner, and in fact we do the same with younger
babies who may bite during teething, around 6 mos of age. If she really
wants to nurse, she will change her ways. It's not a power struggle, but
a simple assertiveness for mom's rights as well as baby's. If presented
and handled in that way, things should change for the better.
