Hi Beverly
I haven't heard of cysts associated with fibrocystic breast disease causing
problems during nursing. As fibrocystic disease tends to be worse when
oestrogen is in our systems at 'higher' levels (eg prior to menstruation),
I would imagine that it would be less of a problem during breastfeeding, as
women are often in a hypo-oestrogenic state then. Maybe your client's cysts
were galactocoeles?
If they were related to pre existing fibrocystic breast disease, some
researchers have found that a diet low in caffeine and fats
was beneficial to women suffering from breast pain related to fibrocystic
disease. (Minton JP, Abou-Issa H 1989, Nonendocrine Theories of the Etiology
of Benign Breast Disease. World Journal of Surgery 13:680-684). Maybe this
would also help your client.
